    GTO Man,

I am in the “panic mode” at Marshall’s Garage to get my car back together as quickly as possible. The driver’s door (inside mechanicals) is in pieces and no end in sight as to when I can get it back together. I also have stainless trim that is being professionally polished that needs to be reinstalled.

At the rate I am going, I will be fortunate if I can get my car ready by the Boondocker’s Ice Breaker show in May.

It is frustrating to get anything done in a timely manner. Those doors are not the easiest thing to work on. What were you doing to it? Where are you having the trim done?

Marshall what is this project you’re working on? A few more touch-ups since this winter’s restoration?

Yes, actually it is. Just a few small things before the season starts.

It was pointed out to me that the original chrome trim was nice, but only “driver quality”. There was some minor surface pitting evident along with the plastic and rubber mounting gaskets and backing plates showing their age (40 years plus). So, I was able to get show quality chrome reproduction stuff (Scott Drake Enterprises) – i.e., tail light housings, door handles, lock cyclinder housings, and new lock cyclinders. I am about to finish up the driver’s door, but in order to replace the door handle, mounting gasket, etc., it is necessary to take off the door panel and work behind the lock mechanisms and window regulators. Essentially the space is very cramped and you cannot see, so I am really working in the dark and my hands and fingers are way too big for what I am trying to do. I am pretty certain, though, that I will get this work done with just a couple of more hours invested into the project.

I then need to pull the stainless steel trim off of the windshield and rear window, and Madison Custom Polishing and Plating on Stewart Street is lined up to take care of that chore.

I have had the car on the road (took it out last Saturday for about an hour), and it is running well.

Sounds great Marshall! How many new chrome pieces did you end up with total? Just looking at a car as a whole you don’t really notice all of them but I bet it was quite a few once they were all off.

Where did you take it on your drive?

I cruised Fish Hatchery up to the Beltline and got on the Beltline and drove up to Gammon and turned back to the Beltline and went down to 18/151 and cruised into Verona. I came out of Verona on Verona Road up to the Beltline again and headed back to the garage. It was a little chilly, but when you’re cruisin’ who notices?

I have replaced a total of seven chrome pieces, four new lock cyclinders, and seven pieces of professionally polished stainless steel trim (so far)

Sounds like a good drive! Keep us up-to-date on your progress with the chrome and steel, do you have any snapshots?
