I am not here to kick the judges in the teeth. They have to make alot of tough calls without pissing everyone off, thats never gonna happen. The problem with the judging was it was VERY inconsistant, if they liked your car they would take the time to judge it, if they didnt like it you got a quick look and that was it. All I am looking for is to be judged like everyone else. Overall I really liked the show, and would love to return next year. Also would like to say thanks to everyone involved for all the effort given to run a large show like this one. One other note, people please know this car show and most car shows are for charity, so if you have sour grapes about how things ran, just remember your giving to some good causes
It's Hard Not to Have a Good Time At Fox Lake Firefighters Car Show!
This was my third trip to the Fox Lake Firefighters car show. When I first got my Chevy up and running in 2008, I got talked into trying it. What a nice show! I actually saw almost everyone smiling,laughing,talking cars,kids playing and everybody just having a great time. There were plenty of cool cars to look at. No matter what you are into,there was something for everyone to appreciate.I later got hungry and went to the food stand,ordered two hot dogs and a Pepsi. I handed the nice lady a ten and got seven back. When is the last time that happened at a car show? The grounds were kept clean and well manicured also.
Since then,I have made it a point to make it up to Fox Lake every last Saturday in July. This is,without a doubt,my favorite car show of the year. I will never want to miss this one! This year was just as nice as the other two,even with the threat of bad weather. I packed up anyway and figured on cleaning the car at the show. We got parked and tried to open the trunk but was stuck due to overpacking and forgetting to trim lock rod. I was Livid! The judges came around and saw my dilemma. They judged the car the way it arrived. No biggie,I didn't build it to show anyway. We enjoyed the rest of the day and saw everything,bought t-shirts(My one small gripe is they do need to re-stock for next year),enjoyed the dee-jay and ate some great food. we thought about leaving.but there were too many ez-ups in the way. We stayed for the trophy presentations and were shocked when they called my name. I never won a trophy before and I thought there were many other cars more deserving than mine. I thought it may have been a sympathy trophy until the two judges came up and said they really liked the workmanship and the color (that my wife used to dislike). This was her first time here and plans to come with me from now on.
Like I said earlier,the judging and the trophies aren't the reasons I come here. I built the car my way,to cruise. It's The smiles and good times that wowed me the first time and will keep me coming from now on. Thank you firefighters,sponsors and people that make this happen!
Once again it is a show that could be fantastic IF they could get quality judges. Some classes, like the mustang classes, were judged right on. Others were done absolutely horribly.
2 Examples: My wife won a trophy in Import Stock all years with her 2005 350Z...and she was the first to admit that there was no way she should have won considering the other vehicles in her class, and she was exactly right.
The other example was downright laughable (coming from someone who has shown and/or judged at tons of shows). The Import Custom class was judged by a kid and his girlfriend (the gf was doing the scoring). She obviously had no clue based on the kinds of questions she asked. What was even better (or worse) was that the guy owned an Acura Integra he was building...and low and behold Honda/Acuras swept the awards. I find it very interesting that an Accord with curb-rashed wheels, stock interior and enginebay, not at all washed would outscore a car that has had near-perfect scores in every show its been in, including World of Wheels.
I asked to see the judging sheets for that class and was basically blown off. I gave them my info and have yet to see anything.
Again, it could be a fantastic show....but the quality of the judging gives it a huge black eye. We've shown there 6 times or so, and this hasnt changed, so I dont think we'll be back. We'll stick with shows that have respectable judging (ie, Beaver Dam, Pardeeville, etc).

The morning was supposed to get rained out, but the rain stopped and the roads dried out by about 8 am. After that slightly late start about 450 cars showed up (slightly down from the previous year..due to rain I'm sure). The park was well marked and the parking was a smooth operation if a little wet.
Proceeds went to the Fire Department and it was obvious that these guys have done this before. It looked like all the kinks of a show this size had been worked out long ago. Congrats to Tony P. and all of his staff and judges.
There were several vendors and a seperate car corral. Cash was given away after the awards and even the spectators got a shot at $150.
There was even a couple of burn out contests and an exhaust noise contest I wasn't forced to stay for because they were after the main awards ceremony....what a good idea...especially for those of us that do our burn outs right before staging at a track.
Anyway, I was marveling all day long what a nice show this was, what a good mix of music was being played, how well the announcer kept us informed without being intrusive, how big the crowds eventually became, how appreciative and curteous the staff and judges seemed to be and how great the weather was and then I won a Best in Class....nothing but gravy for me man.
I think this was the best show I've been to all year. I'll certainly be back.
Nick, sorry to hear that about Fox Lake. We went to this show for years and now haven't been back because it's gotten really big and I don't feel they have the quality judges they need to judge fairly in the amount of time given. It also seems(ed) when we went the same cars won year after year. I will admit the end of the show was always our favorite ~ the burnout contest. Do they still do that?

The show organizer, Tony, called me yesterday to find out what happened from my perspective. He seemed pretty understanding about the crappy judging. He said he plans on making changes to the judging next year. But the proof will be in the delivery, so we'll see how that goes.

Hey Guys,strictly on an opinion standpoint of my own.Speaking highly of all Wisconsin local shows and appreciating all the time and effort it takes to put one of these on.Believe me,I know first hand.But that's the part you have to understand,these are LOCAL shows,not national shows with indoor carpeted show spaces,paid judges and high dollar amount entry fees..These local shows are put on to benefit charities,illnesses,emergency government,scholarships and generally any other good cause you could possibly think of.Although every local show may have a few imperfections from year to year,we have to realize these are not put on by professionals that are taking a wage to do so.We have to understand that problems can be worked out and dealt with on a case by case basis.If we didn't have the car shows to go to,they would be greatly missed.These local shows need positive and negative feedback to get better and put on a great event when their date has arrived.When they are bashed on a public site,it detours people from your event.Just think of how many cities do not even hold a show anymore.A true car enthusiast is one that brings his/her pride and joy out for the public to view and is content with hanging out with fellow enthusiasts.Once again,strictly my opinion.By negative comments on public sites,you are hurting more people than you think.Fox Lake Firefighters car show had 34 judges this year to cover 37 classes.Most of our judges own classic restoration shops,interior shops,bone yards,have multiple collector vehicles them selves.I don't want anyone to think we have less than quality judges that donate their time to help us out.So we do have the caliber and amount of judges that we need to cover this event.Last year was a record turnout for cars registered and they even were rejudging cars that were very close in points.We have tried to open this show up for all makes,models and years and I am wondering if we should be putting a cap on this starting in 2011.Our title states that we are a classic car show and maybe we should be just that.Thanks

If it weren't for the organizers like Tony or Frank or Vicki and Jim, and the volunteer groups such as the Fox Lake firefighters, we would not have the opportunities that we have to show off our cars! I have come to understand that local shows (be they judged or participant pick) are opportunities to hang out with like minded friends who enjoy cars and trucks. I do not expect anything more or anything less when I go to a show. Winning an award is good but spending a day with friends and watching them win an award is even better!
Keep up the good work at Fox Lake. I will be back next year for my 7th year at this show.

"Bashing" as you call it is part of constructive critiscm. Frankly, I think those who were opposed to how your show was ran spoke there piece with tact. If you read some past reviews on this site, you will see straight-up 'Bashing', I know this because there is two shows from last year that completely sucked and I made my opinion heard. This is a public forum that is driven by public input. Not everyone agrees on every topic, and if someone wants to rate a show because they had a negative experience, that is there right as a member. This is the internet, it isn't serious business. IMO, I'm tired of everyone who gets all bent out of shape when they read something they don't agree with. On top of that, this is a car oriented forum. Most car forums have a 'kill or be killed' mentality to them. I like this forum because its laid back and everyone has there own voice (except the lurkers who only read the posts, don't contribute to the site, then corner the admins at a car show about something I posted instead of taking it up with me). Just because someone doesn't share your opinion doesn't make them a bad guy. I like everyone I've met in person on this site. I've never been to the Fox Lake show. Not because of the reviews, but because I've never had the chance to make the drive. As far as awards go, you have to understand that showing a vehicle is a contact sport. You have people that compete to win - even if it is for a $10 plastic trophy. My opinion is that if I am paying a registration fee, I am competing against the other cars in my class. If I get beat fair and square, that's the brass tax of it. I am not one to be jealous, so if a better car than mine shows up and wins, I will use that loss as a highlight on what I can do to compete better. I don't have the nicest car out there, and haven't claimed to ever. I've had fully restored cars, I've had survivor cars, and I've had cars that were drivers. I keep my stuff clean, and I think that is what helps most cars win at shows. With that said, you also have people who attend that are just looking to get out with a car, enjoy the day, and see other peoples prized possesions. I enjoy spending time outdoors, driving my car, seeing others in the hobby that I know and checking out the latest upgrades on there vehicles, and just having a relaxing day. I love cars, always have and always will. For me, they have been a motivation to succeed in life. In high school cars kept me away from drugs, alcohol, and unfortunately girls As I grew older, cars made a career out of me. A career that I love.

I think you need to not take critiscm and "Bashing" so seriously. I know one guy who used to take his cars to Fox Lake and never won an award. I asked him why, and he said it was straight up local politics - he and the fire chief didn't see eye to eye. This is a trailered car keep in mind, and this car owners opinion.
You are more than welcome to be a part of this community, as everyone's input is encouraged. Please do not think that every negative comment regarding your show is only from people using this site either. This is the internet, its not serious business. If your show is having problems, feel free to contact any of the members here via PM and speak with them about the review they gave. Even when they win trophies and i'm talking about last year,an individual received a trophy and he still ripped the show up and down.Should I give him every trophy we have??No, but even though he won an award, that doesn't mean that he doesn't have a legitimate gripe about something related to the show. An award doesn't shut people up or quiet one's opine. I've won awards at shows and been disappointed with many aspects of organization, does that make me a bad guy because I posted on here? I asked him why, and he said it was straight up local politics - he and the fire chief didn't see eye to eye. This is a trailered car keep in mind, and this car owners opinion.

This site is designed to improve the quality of shows we all attend ~ many of the organizers appreciate the comments on their show ~ be it good or bad.... Not every show is perfect, and we don't expect them to be, but when you pay your $10 and don't see eye to eye with something that may have happened, it's often a good idea to speak up and let others know. I know firsthand how much work goes into putting a show together and if there is something wrong, you can bet I want to know about it.

Once again, I'm not trying to argue with you, I'm just stating my point as I see it. Its obvious that you are only interested in discussing what you don't like about your show, and that is this website and its options. If you need to eliminate attendee's, that's your choice and power as organizer of a show. To save you the trouble, I'll make it a point to never attend your show, that way my "rate the show" of Fox Lake doesn't upset you (whether it be good or bad).
The vehicle I reffered to about being trailered is a 1982 Buick Grand National, perhaps you remember it? Its a two-tone silver and gray car, 1 of 25 built in '82 with a turbo and 1 of 16 known to be left in existance. By reading your posts, I'm starting to believe the owner of this car was right when he told me of his discrection about the Fox Lake show a few years ago... Anyway, I'm not here to fight others battles, I'm here to have fun with automobiles, enjoy various discussions with friends, and enjoy the hobby. If you don't feel this site is worthwhile, then I recommend you go somewhere else.

This is one of if not the best local show I have ever attended. I'm from the Milwaukee area and it's nice to see the quality cars that make the drive to Fox Lake. Trophies are HUGE and it's put on right. If anyone has any doubt about attending the show I suggest that they go... I mean where else can you enter a car show for $6 eat two hot dogs for $1 have a beer and still only be out for $10! Not to mention a free entry into a cash raffle. Tony you put on one hell of a show and I hope it's around for years and years!

Wow, simply wow.... The only point I was trying to make was that judging was botched in a few classes. As I said before, other classes were spot on, but 2 in particular were seriously flawed.
I've been a judge at enough shows to see when things go wrong, and I was simply calling it out. And I brought it up as constructive critisism.
What I find funny and a bit disturbing is that has become an issue of "kill the messenger". Yes, I won in my class last year, and brought up issues with the show. And this year, I brought up another issue...and now people are all bent out of shape.
Each time I brought up issues as constructive critisism. Tony and I talked on the phone last Monday and we shared our point of views. I thought everything was hashed over then...apparently not.
Let me be perfecty clear, Im a designer...formally trained as an automotive designer...my career is based on constructive critcism,I have to give and take it daily. So if I see something off or wrong, Ill bring it up.

And if you ever get other shows, feel free to look me up - I drive a GN too.[/quote]Hey Mopar,I do remember the car(nice car)I believe the guys name was Pit-Bull Choppers or something like that?That was many,many years ago already.I think he built custom bikes?If this is the same guy,both came in on a trailer and he off loaded them right on the show grounds.I believe the car took a trophy but the bike didn't.He wasn't happy when I put both in the trailered class and I told him that class is for anything on a trailer.I put that class in because it is hard to show against something like this when it's flawless and the next guy drives his.Now I know that guys will dump cars on the other side of town and drive them in,I can't be everywhere,you guys must see this alot also.I remember he was ticked because he didn't want to be in the trailer class.The honest guys that were in there competed good,but the bike didn't get one.(I think that's how it went,along time ago)If he would of been in a regular bike class he would of got one for sure,very sharp chopper and I even used it on some posters.It just wouldn't of been fair to the guys that drove theirs.

MAN OH MAN....What a lot of pent up emotion there seems to be about all this.
When I got back from Fox Lake and opened a review of the show on this site two weeks ago, I had nothing but positive things to say about the show...and I stand by them. Somebody complained about a couple of judging issues and all hell broke loose.
Tony P. and staff....I'll say it again, your show was the most enjoyable show I've been to all year. Maybe you should cap the show. Most of my friends don't care about the cars you can find on any new or used car lot anyway.
Anyway, I don't want to continue adding fuel to the fire, I just wanted to say to Tony and the Fox Lake Staff and Crew that I appreciate all the work and effort that went into that show. Fox Lake will be on my agenda for years to come.

Thanks to you and your entire crew of volunteers from the Fox Lake Fire Department! I know you and your entire group is busy all year long getting ready for the annual show.
There will always be a few hiccups along the way with each and every show. What I appreciate the most is that you stop and fix them, change them, or correct them as needed. As a participant, I couldn't ask for anything more.
I was attending this show even before I had a car to show, and I will continue to support this show!
I agree with Marshall. Ive always said its a nice show with a huge assortment of vehicles. All I was doing was calling out the issues so that they can be addressed, simple as that.

As I grew older, cars made a career out of me. A career that I love.
Wish we had that kind of budget.
