Number of Cars to Trophies Ratio [discussion] 1 Year, 1 Month ago

What do you think is an appropriate number of classes/awards to cars for a show? If you give too many awards, almost every car will get an award. What do you think is fair? I was thinking something like 1 in 10 or 1 in 5 if possible

Good subject,
I noticed that at Blanchardville there were two custom cars. They both received an award. I thought that was wrong. Not sure on the ratio though..

1-5 seems like a good ratio to me.
For large shows it is a lot of trophys but also allows for moving them around if you keep the trophy all the same.
So if three cars only show for one class, you have one trophy, but if 40 cars show for one class you can add a trophy.
You could have 4th and 5th have no number on it so they could be generic trophys to hand out in over stuffed classes. Does that make sense to anyone else to do?
I've seen plenty of car shows not have the place you finish on them. Especially for small shows.

I agree that 1 trophy per every 5 cars is a good ratio for larger shows. But maybe a 1 per 3 would be a good ratio for smaller shows (say under 100 cars)
I don't think you can really hurt by having too many trophies. It makes people feel appreciated. Giving out 5 trophies in a class can diminish the value of a trophy. But let's face it, a trophy is a piece of plastic that has more appreciation than value. It makes someone feel appreciated for their hard work. I don't think it is a bad idea to appreciate more people, rather than leave people out.

I actually think the opposite. I hate to bring this up and I won't say names or cars that I saw looking a little mad but I think some people were butthurt at the All Ford show this past weekend.
71 FoMoCo's showed, 21 trophies. I saw some very nice cars not get trophys and I could tell from the looks of the owners they thought they where snubbed.
It was participant voting. I think that had a lot to do with it.

I wonder how many of those people will think twice about returning next year? Isn't the idea to improve participation and not to damage feelings?
Another example of participant voting hurting a show.

Allowing as to how organizers and promoters don't really know how many cars and what classes will be filled prior to a show, I would ask why extra trophies are not on hand, just in case there are some classes that get added on the day of the show, so that the show is inclusionary for all cars/trucks/motorcycles. I would think that trophies that are not handed out could be returned for partial credit, or used in the larger classes on the day of the show.
I understand that trophies cost money and that most shows need to have prearranged sponsors paying for trophies ahead of the show. The other point that I would make is that many shows are geared to maximize the amount of money raised for the charity, so typically, the number of trophies tend to be less so that the charity gets more at the end of the day.

1 award (trophy/plaque) per 3 vehicles is fair. You get 10 cars in a class, 3 drive away with awards.
I like the "best of class" format with awards over the 1st, 2nd, 3rd place. This helps keep some mystery to the judging results in classes. And if your award just says Best of Class, they can be moved around for larger classes where 4 or 5 awards are given. Giving more than 5 awards per class is overkill.
Participant judging should be outlawed, its nothing more than a popularity contest. Cars that don't deserve an award take hardware home over cars that do deserve recognition.
