New Project I got my fingers on 1 Month, 3 Weeks ago by lilwillie
Hey guys, just tooting my own horn. I just acquired this a few days ago.

It is a '76 BMW 2002. Rolling chassis, no engine, trans, or interior. Plans will be long and expensive. Track car. Either going to Improved Touring or Production for road racing in the Midwestern Council and at the same time keep it legal for use on the streets so I can take it to cruise nights and shows. I've always had a road race bug and have been patiently waiting for the right car to build it on and I think this is it. No hurry on this, the car needs about everything. I know, I know, cheaper to buy a used race car then build one but there is no fun it in that. Half the fun is the journey.

However long it takes is no matter, as you can see I already have the next Senna waiting for it to be track worthy!

How hard is it to find parts if needed?

I have a original 2.0L 4cyl M10 for it sitting on a engine stand. It's been patiently waiting to go in something. The engine was a spare for my E21 320i BMW but I'll build it for this car now. Then I'll source a 4 speed for it. If I plan to run in Improved Touring or Production I have to have the engine and trans option for the car to make it legal for the division.

Parts are plentiful. From '66 to '76 was the production run for the 2002 series and they built a lot of them. The 2002 was the car that put BMW on the map for road racing,,IMO. It has been built so many times for Group 5,Club racing, Rally or Autocross that there are tons of aftermarket performance, suspension, brake and chassis items available.

One more reason why I always wanted one. They are easy to build. My '82 320i BMW was what I had hoped to turn into a Club Racer but the aftermarket support for it is very scarce, so it is just a daily driver now.

I've already started finding sources for a pedal box, trans. I have all the marker lights, front grille, trim, brackets so I'll fix any body issues it has, keep cleaning the interior out. Cage it. Then a pair of race seats and harness. Gauge clusters, drive train, fuel cell, fire system and still keep it licensed to drive on the street.

Sure, a observant officer could tell me it isn't legal whenever I get it done but I'd just drive to to shows, cruise ins or events.
